Bring WorkTraits Home
By Mark Vickers, Ph.D.
My favorite WorkTraits compliment is "I took what I learned and improved my family relationships." WorkTraits is all about learning how to communicate effectively. When you practice good communication in the workplace, it's easy to apply it to other relationships. And when you see those principles work in your personal relationships, it then becomes easier to work along side and communicate effectively with your co-workers.
But how do I apply WorkTraits communication principles at home? Here are four tips depending upon the style of your family members:
How to support and speak to Decision-Makers: Be straight forward, to the point, sincere, and tell them at least one thing you appreciate about their personality. Decision-Makers appreciate verbal affirmation.
How to support and speak to Encouragers: Let them entertain you, and let them know that they bring life and laughter to the family. Encouragers love to be encouraged! They also love physical affirmation. So give them a hug!
How to support and speak to Facilitators: Ask them for their opinions on anything. They will appreciate the fact that you asked and will gladly reply. They also love physical affirmation. So give them a hug, too!
How to support and speak to Trackers: Give them your undivided attention. Listen and be ready to go deep into a conversation. Let them know that you appreciate how they see the world.
So bring home some of what you've taken from WorkTraits; it will change your life and work!
